Outdoor Camps / Non - Profits - Camp Chi

Camp Chi is located in Lake Delton, WI, the heart of the Wisconsin Dells. The offseason office is located at 5050 Church St in Skokie, IL. This camp is run by the JCC (Jewish Community Centers of Chicago) and functions as a non-profit organization.

Background
Camp Chi is a Jewish camp that was founded in 1921 in its original location in Antioch, IL.
In 1953 the camp moved to Lake Delton where they acquired 600 acres full of fields, pools, an indoor gym, climbing wall, high ropes course, arts and craft center, horseback riding stables, water ski docks, and so much more. The summer session consists of two sessions each 28 days long.

Employment Opportunities
Each summer the camp employs about 400 people for many different jobs. These jobs include cabin counselors, lifeguards, nurses, area leaders, and specialists for every activity that is offered at camp. In addition to these summer jobs, the camp fluctuates from 5-8 full time staff. These jobs include programing director, business manager, and directors (Main, Associate, Assistant).

Current Trends and Issues
During the offseason, Camp Chi offers offseason teen programs every few months. An advisory board of teens run by the Teen Director plans events for other campers during the school year. They plan reunions, retreats, and many other fun activities. In October there is a reunion for the SITs (staff in training) and in November there is a reunion for all campers. One issue that the camp is facing is the economic situation. Since many families cannot afford to send their children to camp, the camp is retaining less campers and registering less new campers.

Leisure and Beyond
With all the different activities that Camp Chi has to offer, every camper can find something they find leisurely. The camp claims, "campers return home with not only great memories, but with increased self-confidence in their abilities to accomplish everything from reaching the top of the climbing wall to negotiating the ins-and-outs of cabin life." The camps goal is to show every camper a great summer.

Synopsis
Camp Chi offers an extraordinary amount of opportunities for people to partake in leisure. They have tons of different activities that everyone can find something they enjoy. This agency is a religiously affiliated youth-serving agency. It meets many of the standards of that type of agency. To me, I think the pros of working at this agency would be that I get to positively influence children, plan fun events, work outdoors, and interact with lots of people on a daily basis. Although there are many pros of working at an agency like this the downside is that there are few full time jobs. New full time positions only open up when a staff member leaves. I would love to work at an agency like this though because it sounds entertaining and there are different challenges everyday.
